Noise Abatement Objective (NAO) for Dublin Airport

The noise abatement objectives as outlined are very conservative. The noise impact of motor vehicles is expected to be much reduced by the various target dates outlined (2030 etc.) due to electric vehicles so other sectors are benefitting from more modern modes of transport, but we are expected to tolerate high levels of noise till 2050. Fingal County Council seems beholden to the airport.

Various practices could be adopted quickly to reduce the impact to residents.

Jets should only rev their engines (so to speak) while the engines are pointed towards the airport and not pointed towards built up areas like Swords.

Swords should not be exposed to a double impact of engines taking off, flying away from Swords and then over Swords towards the east. It is annoying enough to experience the noise of an aircraft once let alone multiple times in the early part of its journey. This causes there to be literally no break sometimes from the noise as successive planes take off in quick succession.

There are no specific measures (such as the above) outlined in the Noise Abatement objectives document. This would need to be done to show residents that the abatement of noise is a serious and short term objective.

A well maintained phone service (with an actual person on the other end of the line) where residents could complain when there is successive noise would help, and would allow people to feel that they are being taken seriously. Additionally it would make the airport more accountable to their neighbours and focus attention on being a better neighbour rather than just making money.

Regular consultations would help too.

Residents in the affected areas should be able to look forward to planned periods where there will be little or no noise due to use of the further runways. This will allow greater enjoyment of the amenities and back gardents.
