CHAPTER 5: Climate Action
Biomethane will play an important role in decarbonising Ireland's economy, particularly in the agriculture and energy sectors. The Government has set an annual production target of 5.7TWh of biomethane by 2030, which equates to roughly 10% of Ireland's current gas demand.
Potential for biomethane production in Fingal is strong, with its significant agriculture sector.
Gas Networks Ireland suggests adding biomethane as an example of a biofuel to the amendments in section 5.5.3.1 Renewable Energy, page 188 and section 5.5.3.5 Other Sources of Renewable Energy, page 190.
