The Skerries Active Travel Plan is a Fingal County Council initiative to improve walking and cycling in Skerries. It proposes safer, connected routes, traffic calming, and improved crossings to reduce car dependency, enhance accessibility, and support sustainable travel, particularly for school, local, and commuter journeys.
What are Front of School Interventions?
The rationale for front of school interventions is to ensure that children can walk to school safely, promoting active travel, while reducing traffic congestions around school zones. Front of School interventions can highlight the presence of the school to motorists and encourage slower speeds within the school zone
Aim of Interventions
Improve safety at the school gate by providing ‘front of school’ treatments to alleviate congestion and improve access;
Improve access routes to school by improving walking and cycling infrastructure
Increase the number of students who cycle to school.
What is Proposed for St Patrick’s Junior and Senior National Schools in Skerries?
Resurfacing of a approaches to both schools, including the laying of a textured buff coloured surface.
The installation of two new Zebra Crossings on New Street and Dublin Road. respectively.
The inclusion of new road markings, signage and footpath upgrades.
Together, all of these changes will make the approach to the school, and the school entrance, safer for children which will encourage increased walking and cycling to school. The changes will also make the area around the school more accessible for people on foot and safer for people of all ages to walk or cycle. These changes will make drivers more aware of the proximity of the school.

The works will be carried out under Section 38 Road Traffic Act 1994 (as amended) and section 95 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 (as amended).
